The Two Sides of Change

Spring shows us the two sides of Change. One day we will see the grass greening and flowers emerging. Yet on the horizon are rain or show. The very next day we can have a good snowfall, suggesting winter has not left.
It is the same with personal change. One moment we feel the budding of new possibilities. And the next, a sense of regressing to previous states.
If this yo-yo shifting has happened for you, take hope in the understanding of spring -- That the weather does change and growth becomes abundant.

We have invited a a special teacher from New York to share with Calgarians a unique way of understanding ourselves which increases our ability to be balanced in life. Anastasi Siotas, is highly recognized world-wide for his teaching and depth of knowledge in many areas. He seamlessly blends his background in dance and marine biology with his curiosity with 21-century anatomy.

The ability to remain balanced in our ever-changing world requires a coordination that is in a state of refinement over our lifetime. The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education provides precise tools for such continuous self-study and leads to ever broader skills that bring more balance to life. Feldenkrais lessons mine the richness of evolutionary and developmental modes of locomotion and unlock their potential for improving ones ability to find ones feet well-grounded while standing tall and moving.

The feeling of effortless movement and sense of balance arises when all our systems; muscular, skeletal and fascial work in an integrated way with our neurology and emotions. No part of our system works more than necessary thus freeing disproportionate tensions that hinder our comfort. Feldenkrais lessons explore the “how” of finding this state of ease and support Biotensegrity: a 21st-century anatomical concept that views all organisms as a complex integration of cellular subsystems. About Anastasi Siotas

Anastasi is a Greek-Australian well known for his expertise in structural anatomy gained through studies and teaching in diverse fields such as marine cell biology, modern dance, and biotensegrity. Anastasi completed his Feldenkrais training in Sydney, Australia. In 1997 he moved to New York City where he studied NLP and at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, where he currently teaches Kinesthetic Anatomy. Anastasi has been assisting in the training of new Feldenkrais practitioners in NYC continuously since 1998, as well as working as a visiting assistant trainer for programs in Boston, Baltimore, Vienna/Austria, Tokyo/Japan, Dalian/China, and Greece.

Get the kinks out, feel more ready for life! The Tuesday evening class starts September 25 with the theme of Ease and Comfort.

Fall is a time of new beginnings, new learnings. Whether you have cranky hips, stiff low back, grumbling shoulders, complaining jaws, touchy toes, you will find something in each class that eases your discomfort.

What is your way of increasing your sense of health and vitality? Come experience the Feldenkrais Method, which has helped so many to resolve back pain & enjoy life again. With or without back pain, you can benefit from this class. 

Fall, 2019 Class

Get the kinks out, feel more ready for life! The Tuesday evening class starts Sept 10.

Fall is a time of returning to learning, opportunity and change. As we move more into the Fall season, there is the dropping away of the bursts of energy and expansion so much apart of summer, and a turning inward, toward reflection.

Whether you have cranky hips, stiff low back, grumbling shoulders, complaining jaws, touchy toes, you will find something in each class that eases your discomfort and gives you a sense of optimism for the year.

What is your way of increasing your sense of health and vitality? Come experience the Feldenkrais Method, which has helped so many to resolve back pain & enjoy life again. With or without back pain, you can benefit from this class. 

In this class you will discover new ways for the possibilities of movement to begin to flow from your center, along your limbs, to your hands and feet.  Experience the possibility of moving with comfort and ease.

In order to be able to do this, you will do gentle movements under guided instruction and with awareness. These will be done while sitting, standing and lying on the floor.

All you need to attend this class is a desire to learn new ways of moving. All movements can be modified for individual needs.

The weekly series continues on Tuesday evenings,  starting Tuesday Sept 10 at 7 pm for 1 hour

Fee: the usual fees are: CJC Members: $168; non-members: $192. Drop-ins welcome. Drop-in Fee: $16. Register at the front desk.

What to Wear. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Sometimes the classroom can be cool, so socks are recommended.

At the beginning of class you will want to remove jewelry or earrings, belts with buckles and items from your pockets (e.g. keys) which may become uncomfortable. During the class you will remove your glasses.

About Soma Documents

All too often we feel discomfort or lack of sleep, but we do not know the history.  This is especially the case for people who have sufficient pain that their attention is drawn to it throughout the day and evening and even into regular sleep times. At some point they just don't know what their life might be like without the pain. They don't really know to what degree their sleep patterns have been interfered with.

The purpose in creating the Soma Diaries is to provide people with a tool to discern patterns. By reflecting on the patterns, a person begins to feel more in charge of their life -- rather than feeling controlled by their pain, or lack fo sleep -- or both. Most people will see patterns and then begin a process of problem solving to remediate the issues that emerged in their patterns.

Soma Diary Soma Sleep Record

Soma Diary - Basic (Pain). This is a way to track your pain in a convenient day-by day form. (click to download)

Soma Diary - Times of the Day. Sometimes a person's pain fluctuates during the day. This form tracks four common periods of the day in a way so that you can see emergent patterns.(click to download this form)

Soma Diary - Elaborated. Often pain is also associated with reduced energy and flattened emotions, sometimes even bordering on depression. This form is a way to track your pain but parallel to your energy and emotions.

Soma Diary - Musicians. Many musicians believe they must perform while in pain. Then they reach a threshold beyond which performance, even practicing seems impossible. This form allows the musician to track his or her patterns.

Soma Diary - Performers. Many performers believe they must perform while in pain. Then they reach a threshold beyond which performance, even practicing seems impossible. This form allows the performer to track his or her patterns.

Soma Diary - Athletes. Many athletes believe they must perform while in pain. Then they reach a threshold beyond which performance, even practicing seems impossible. This form allows the athlete to track his or her patterns.

The Soma Sleep Record forms assist you in tracking your daily sleep-waking patterns in a convenient format that allows you to see at a glance the patterns in your sleep/wake cycle.

Both pages allow  you to record up to one week of your sleep pattern -- plus space for notes that help you understand what transpired.

The first page has directions on how to complete the daily diagram. The second page has space to summarize your pattern over 7 days.
