Without your balance, life feels downside-up

balanceA recent article in the Washington Post intrigued me. The byline was, "Ever wondered about how we stay on our feet?" 

they write, '"Most people would say you have five senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. Recently, scientists have expanded their view of what makes up a sense. For example, some would argue that hunger is a sense and that the abilities to feel pain and pressure are senses.

Without your sense of balance, you couldn’t stand or walk without falling on your face. Balance is the result of the brain processing information that comes from three systems: your eyes, your inner ear and something called proprioception."

Stress & Learning

“Previous research has already shown that stress can prevent the retrieval of memories. But now we have discovered that it also has a major effect on our perception and perceptual learning,” explains Dr Hubert Dinse. A recent study demonstrates how stress disrupts memory and interrupts learning. Medications used in the treatment of immunological and neurological diseases may counteract rehabilitation efforts, which rely on just these mechanisms of memory and learning.

Tiny Eye Movements Restored His Vision

What to Do When Opening the Mouth Is Difficult

Sandra Bradshaw brings us a new, simple approach to easing the discomfort with the jaw entitled, Enjaw” Yourself with an Out-of-the-Box Strategy

She writes, "You open and close your mouth multiple times every day. It’s a simple action until you have restrictions in the jaw. Eating, talking, breathing, moving in general are all affected by the ability to open and close the mouth." 




Balance-When we don't have it


Balance. What we know…what others don’t know…and what we can do about it.

Alan Questel, a highly respected trainer of the Feldenkrais Method, recently wrote about the intriguing idea of Balance. He introduced the idea as, "Balance is fascinating...its up there with gravity...self-image...creativity...self-organization.... One of Feldenkrais’ biggest claims to fame was how he could make the abstract, concrete. By helping someone improve his or her balance we are making the abstract concrete. Our work is based in action. "
